Git On Da Birthday Bus

r'sbus

You knew it was coming. All the talk about lurking birthdays, the festive banner, the cake store.

Yup, today’s my birthday. And it just happens I was born on a Tuesday. Also happens that it snowed that day, although I think we’re past all that right here, right now.

A friend whom I recently discovered on Facebook commented that this photo made him miss Virginia. Well, just happens that I miss California, his place of residence, since visiting there a few years back. So he writes that if I come to California, take this bus. And I’m ready to go, and am thinking, wow, this looks an awful lot like a giant birthday cake to me (the cake thing again) or a huge beautifully wrapped gift. Actually, it’s the Love Bus from San Francisco’s lovEvolution, an annual dance music parade and festival, and from what I see of the YouTube videos, a great time for all. As soon as I saw R’s photo, I knew it would make for a very happy birthday post, so today I’ve made it my birthday bus.

So, thank you, R, for letting me post your most groovy pic!

A birthday, snow…and Lou Reed?

A birthday snow

A birthday snow2

I hadn’t thought much of posting on my birthday, much less about my birthday, but then figured, what the hey. Afterall, isn’t that what blogging is all about? Whether one vents, informs, unloads or boasts, it’s all okay—and expected. I mean I could never imagine walking into a workplace (if I were so unlucky to have one) and announce to all, “Hey, heads up! Today’s my birthday!” But, to do so to all of you out there from right here…hmmm, doesn’t bother me a bit. So, considering today’s weather, I thought it a good idea to mention it. Reason being…

…today’s weather conditions seem to mirror those on the day I burst forth into the world. You see, my mother never fails to mention that on the day I was born there was a big snow storm. Not knowing if big meant a few inches or a few feet, I googled. Lo and behold (speaking of age, how old is that saying?), on March 2, nineteen-hundred-and-something, in Chicago, Illinois (508 miles north of my beginnings), snow fell to a depth of 11.5 inches. NOAA described it as “…the 7th greatest calendar day snowfall total in Chicago’s recorded history.” So, I assume that at the very least, a few inches of the white stuff must have blown south to my soon-to-be location, a town in eastern Kentucky, so small that its weather stats are unknown, even by Google. Anyway, you can see from my photos taken first thing this morning and at noon, that we indeed did get at least a few inches. Now, while roaming Google, I noticed some musical connections…

Da-da-da-da-da-da…You say it’s your birthday, da-da-da-da-da-da…It’s my birthday too, yeah…or so sang the Beatles, fave rockers of almost everyone, I’m certain. I noticed a few musicians born on my day. Not the same year, mind you, but still on my day. They are…

  1. Coldplay’s incredibly energetic Chris Martin, born March 2, 1977, could, age-wise, pass only as my son (so sorry to say).
  2. Jon Bon Jovi, born March 2, 1962, is a favorite of mine more so for his screen presence (or just plain presence, if ‘ya know what I mean) than his singing and could easily qualify as a younger brother. Not too bad.
  3. Karen Carpenter, born March 2, 1950, (what gal doesn’t like Karen Carpenter songs?) could have easily filled in as big sister, if she were still with us, of course…
  4. Pop singer John Cowsill of The Cowsills (the singing siblings on which The Partridge Family was based), born March 2, 1956, and who sang one of my favorites, “The Rain, The Park and Other Things,” could almost, holy cow! be my twin, age-wise!
  5. Desi Arnaz, husband of LUCY Ball, born March 2, 1917, would fit right in as a grandfather if he were with us today (and who I chose to include in my list for obvious reasons!).
  6. And last, but not least, Lou Reed, the oft-quoted crooner of one of my favorite bloggers (who I’ve shamelessly baited by including “Lou Reed” in my subject line), born March 2, 1942, would fill the bill as an older, older brother. If Lou and I were two of four siblings, evenly spaced, he would be the oldest and I would be the youngest.

So there. It would’ve been a lot easier just to give my year of birth, but this was more fun for me and it is my birthday. ;o)

Happy Birthday, Lucy!

Lucy's birthday

I know, I know…it’s “Silent Sunday,” but due to recent problems with the site the announcement of Lucy’s birthday went, well, unannounced. Not forgotten, though. Yesterday she was two years young and enjoyed a gargantuan rawhide chew, a rip-roaring time in the dog park and a long morning walk in Old Town Alexandria. W was able to catch her in this very attentive pose. Hmmm, her stare is so intense…makes one wonder if something is perched atop his head…
