Next to the tennis ball, Lucy loves snirt best. After retrieving the ball, she runs to the top of the snow+dirt pile, plops down and gives it some love ‘n’ affection. Crazy dog.

Okay, so she doesn’t wield a racket and play your traditional game of tennis, but that girl loves chasing the tennis ball, and on the tennis court, no less. Recently the courts have been the only places free and clear of mounds of snow, and I don’t know what we’re going to do when spring arrives and they start to fill up with humans. I guess it’ll be back to the grassy fields for us. Too bad, ’cause no human could ever strike a prettier pose on the court than Lucy.

Once Lucy starts hitting the ground during a walk, it’s a sure sign that she’s winding down. Here she is at the Shirlington dog park that runs alongside the Four Mile Run creek in Arlington, Virginia, and is right across the road from the upscale Shirlington Village. The other side of the park is lined with old warehouses. I hope to write more about Shirlington at a later time, as there is some history there for me.

Lucy takes a break from her beloved tennis balls, which usually veer off course in the backyard and land in snow too deep for her to tread. But a good stick is a decent stand-in, and the yard is full of fallen branches from the recent snow storms. Come warmer weather, an expanse of bright green dots will slowly emerge from beneath the melting snow, and she’ll be retrieving tennis balls again.

Many thanks to W for passing along these great Lucy-in-the-snow photos, which he took in his time-outs from shoveling. His path for Lucy—the snow was too high for her to hop—is now her racetrack around the backyard. And how ’bout that snow bling? You go girl!

This was taken at the small dog park I mentioned here. The shaggy blonde is Tessa, and she was very persistent, not letting Lucy rest for a moment. The high-pitched bark and alligator snap mean Lucy’s had enough and is ready to walk. Lucy’s a funny girl. She seems to “use” other dogs only as a means to expend her pent up energy. She doesn’t endlessly demand other dogs’ attention like some. She has her own agenda. You go girl! (Click to enlarge if you’d like a water spray!)

…or stand there dawdling, seriously cutting into my squirrel time? Ears back, eyes fixed on the ball, Lucy listens for critter activity in the woods while waiting for me to get my act together. Yes, Lucy is quite the multitasker.

One of the most heartbreaking things about caring for animals is watching them struggle as they age. Emma, a golden retriever, graced our life for 11 years after we adopted her at age 4. Here she is, age 13, contemplating a porch step at our friends’ home in the Florida Keys. She’s preparing to brave it, aware of the pain her arthritic hips will cause. Once she conquered the step, though, she didn’t dwell on the pain or the difficulties of getting older. She just moved on and continued to enjoy her life.
