A Sad Ending

After reading yesterday’s post, A New Beginning, a friend commented on Facebook that the story reminded him of the 1998 Fastball song, The Way, which was based on the story of a Salado, Texas, elderly couple’s disappearance. Certainly not our neighbors’ fate, but who knows…maybe they would find that some of the lyrics resonate. No matter, it is a sad song and kinda makes you think… . Thanks, H.

They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going Without ever knowing the way?
They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down They started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?

CHORUS:

Anyone could see The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And It’s always summer, they’ll never get cold
They’ll Never get hungry
They’ll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows Wandering off somewhere
They won’t make it home
But they really don’t care
They wanted the highway
They’re happier there today , today

The children woke up
And they couldn’t find ‘em
They Left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off
And left it all behind ‘em
But Where were they going Without ever knowing the way?

Anyone could see The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And It’s always summer, they’ll never get cold
They’ll Never get hungry
They’ll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows Wandering off somewhere
They Won’t make it home
But they really don’t care
They wanted the highway
They’re happy there today , today (repeat)

I’ve been thinking about this story since your earlier FB post reminded me of it. It is ironic that the song only became sad in retrospect. When written and created by the group’s bassist Tony Scalzo, the fate of the couple was unknown. Scalzo imagined the older couple wandering off, free of responsibility, to roam the country to have fun .

Unfortunately, if you know the rest of the story it’s hard to hear the song in the spirit in which it was written. And it reminds us that what we bring to the table shades the facts we see and shapes the outcomes we wish would happen.

    • Hi Howard. I wish I’d known about this before I posted, I would’ve surely used it. I read some of the background of the story, so know what you mean. You’re right…it is hard to hear it and have that happy n’ carefree feeling, ’cause it’s not the reality.

PS – what a nice icon your blog as assigned to me. Is that an arrow through my head?
