Recently I’ve been pretty lazy, however, I have kept up the biking…I’ve also kept up the whining about the heat, too-steep hills and grinding gears and chain rub—the latter a result of my lack of shifting skill. Oh well. Anyway, on Saturday, four of us rode from Vienna to Herndon, and I took these pics of the Herndon Depot and Museum that lies alongside the W&OD bike trail and, most importantly, has a working water fountain. Yay! The depot, built in the 1850s, was a working train station for the dairy town of Herndon until 1968, but is now a museum and is a popular rest stop for all who travel the W&OD.
That’s our friend, K. While we’re resting in the shade, he insists on sitting in the blazing sun, sans sunscreen and sunglasses. Don’t see how he does it.

I’ve been pretty lazy myself. At least you are keeping up the rides. I normally love the heat but for some reason it’s really getting to me lately.

Decided not to ride yesterday ’cause of the temps, but may ride today…only one hour and before noon, so it shouldn’t be too bad. Still lazy, though. And it’s no wonder the heat is getting to you…102…geesh. Try to stay cool!
The WO&D…that might be the one I biked into DC on from Frederick Maryland…or Leesburg…one of those places…

The W&OD runs from Shirlington, Virginia, through Leesburg, to Purcellville, so you would’ve had to have been in Virginia. But there are a lot of biking trails up there in Maryland, too. I think the C&O towpath runs from DC to Maryland. Hey, haven’t we “talked” about this before?
We have several old depots like that around here. They always send me off daydreaming about the way things were, when the trains were still in operation. Many of the old tracks have been removed and converted into bike trails that pass through some very scenic territory.
That’s what the W&OD is, nothingprofound. The bike path was built over top the old Washington & Old Dominion tracks. I’m not sure, though, how many of the stations have been preserved along the way. Also very scenic.
Appreciate the details here. Was easy to read.
