My grandmother, my dad’s mom, would’ve been 106 today. I wrote a little bit about her here, on this day, one year ago.
She loved flowers and actually grew purple allium in her yard. After she passed away, my cousins, sister and I carefully dug up some of her irises, tiger lilies, gladiolas and allium and divided them amongst ourselves since we hadn’t yet learned the fate of her property. We wanted to make sure that they were kept in the family and were cared for as she had done for decades.
This is a similar blossom from nearby Green Spring Gardens. I don’t think she’d mind me showing a stand-in flower instead of her own. My yard doesn’t provide the sun that they need. I do have a bed of her purple irises, but have yet to capture a nice photo of them…I’m either out of town when they bloom or my photographic skills fail me. I’ll keep trying, though.
Happy Birthday, N.

Nice shot – reminded me of one of those big brilliant firework explosions that light up the whole sky. :)

Thanks, NHG, and yeah, that’s a good description…a fireworks burst. Often commenters see stuff in my pics that never occurs to me…surprise!
Lovely association between your grandmother and these beautiful flowers. Nice to think her spirit lives on in them.

Thanks, nothingprofound. Yeah, certain flowers remind me of her…I wish I had enough sun to grow these.

Joanne Olivieri´s last blog post ..Plethora of Purple Flowers
Thanks, Joanne. I’m glad you like the stories. And thank you on the pic. I’ve been having a hard time lately getting a good one, but this one is okay, I think. I’ve not been paying enough attention to the light…always tend to go out in the middle of the day.
What an interesting looking flower. I have a few plants that came from my dads house. They don’t grow quite as well in my care as they did in his but they make for good memories.
ann´s last blog post ..Enough said
Hi, ann. I think these are pretty interesting, too. Yeah, I don’t have near the green thumb that my grandmother had. Thankfully, the irises kinda take care of themselves.
Very sweet post & pretty flower. :)

Beautiful photo of a beautiful flower. What a great way to remember your grandmother, by growing her plants in your garden.
Janie of Utah´s last blog post ..Birds in the Neighborhood
Hi and thanks, Janie. I like this flower, too…so different. Yeah, my grandmother had so many plants, and would you believe that a cedar tree that my dad planted in the yard about 65 years ago is still there??? I’m so glad the new owners kept the tree when the house was rebuilt.
Yes, it is like a burst of fireworks.
My mother has my grandmother’s Christmas cactus and a huge fern that belonged to Kevin. There’s something about having a plant that belonged to a person who is now gone that brings the person back to life.
Jennifer´s last blog post ..Disappearing act
Hey Jennifer. I know what you mean about the plants. Luckily the spider plant and irises are doing okay. When my grandfather (mother’s side) died back in the 80′s, I took a piece of a plant from a basket sent to the funeral home. It’s one of those with the small arrow-shaped leaves. I couldn’t keep it alive in dirt, but it did okay in water. It has about three leaves left and I’m afraid if I plant it, it’ll die. Actually, I’m looking at it now and it seems to be dying as I type… :o(
[...] Mmmm, huckleberries, or what I also call wild blueberries…another happy reminder of life at my grandmother’s house that, until a few years ago, sat just a mile or so up the road from where I now live. Yep, the same grandmother I spoke of here and more recently, here. [...]
