Not Me, On The Path

girlonbike

While on the bike path yesterday, I stopped alongside to practice panning with the camera, and I caught this commuter. W jokingly said that I should post this and tell everyone that it’s me. Hey! What’s that supposed to mean!? Actually, there’d be no mistaking the two of us…’cause my bike’s red…and hers is blue. There. Anyway, in the words of Judy Tenuta, “It could happen!” Yeah, I could look like this…someday, but maybe I never will. And that’s fine, ’cause my attitude toward biking is that—like the Chinese proverb says—the journey is the reward.

Today’s ride may be on the Custis Trail that branches off of the W&OD, which we were on yesterday. It’s the route I took when I worked in DC…five years ago…and haven’t ridden since. It has three huge hills. And I’m lousy on hills. So, be prepared for more pics from alongside the path.

OH NO not hills. The last time I tried to ride my bike up a big hill I got half way up and had to get off and walk the bike the rest of the way. And that was when I was young. I probably wouldn’t even make it a 1/4 of the way now.

    • I know what you mean, ann. Better to get off and walk rather than blow your knees out. I’ve never done well with hills. By the way, we happened to NOT take the hilly route as planned. We did the flats and I’m still hurtin’!

  • The town I live in is hilly, like a miniature San Francisco. so riding a bicycle is quite a challenge here. I’m always in awe of the students (we have two colleges here) and how effortlessly they pedal up the steep inclines. It’s hard enough to walk up those hills.

    • I am convinced that some people have the legs for hills and others don’t. Years ago when I was in my best shape and cycling was my only mode of transportation, I was still crappy on the hills. W, though is another story. He has no problem climbing and actually seeks out the danged things. Thank goodness for my granny gear!

Nothing like sailing along on a bike – I remember those days from my childhood…

  • Haven’t biked in, well let’s just say, a very long time. It was so much fun in my early days but now I prefer my fee flat on the ground walking.

    • I know what you mean, Joanne. It doesn’t take much to bring the bike down…a rock or a stick and before you know it, you’re on the ground. Walking is good!

Holly – I’ll bet that really is you. It’s very tricky of you to photograph yourself and say ‘that’s not me’ . . . to throw us off the, um, path.

    • Ha! I liked your pun there, koe.

I wish that were me, but sorry to say, I’m far from it. But I’m working on it. Which reminds me…time to hop on the trainer. See? It’s 50′s and windy and I’m wimping out from taking a “real” ride. :o|

  • Looks like the girl I used to pace myself for about five miles into the city Tuesday when I was running late and she whipped past me…she sleek and aerodynamic, me with the muscle…

    • If there’s anything good about riders faster than us, it’s that, well, they’re faster than us, and we can draft ‘em. Sleek and aerodynamic is good, though usually being the one who’s drafting, I’d rather they be a little bigger to widen the wake, which come to think of it, is a plus for the guy behind me (the only plus).
