Washington & Old Dominion Trail

w&od

This is just a tiny section of my favorite bike path, the W&OD Trail. I’m facing east, and right out of view is the intersection of Washington Street and Rt. 66 in Falls Church, which is walking distance from the East Falls Church metro. The total distance of the trail, which spans from Shirlington to Purcellville, is almost 45 miles.

  • Looks like fun…nice and flat…is it a rail trail?

    • It used to be a railroad, drjay, and after it closed down the trail was built over top the rail bed. It is a fun trail and most of it is flat…just some short, quick hills. At this time of year we used to do training rides from Shirlington to Leesburg to get ready for TOSRV, which is this weekend. Actually, I only did TOSRV once, but it was fun tagging along.

Hi Holly! It’s all looking lush and green over your way – different to the snow I saw last time I came over here :) Can it be that a whole season has gone by?

I am ashamed at how little cycling I’ve done lately, need to get back in the saddle and this is a great reminder. That trail looks inviting! I’m glad to have made it over for a peek – hopefully I’ll get to read back a little as I feel like I must have missed a LOT…

    • Hi Bird! Yes, it is all very nice now…the air is still breezy and dry…none of our notorious humidity yet!

Don’t feel bad. It has taken me years to get back into it, and I wouldn’t say I’m actually into it yet, since I’ve just started. It does feel good though, once the ride is done, that is. Don’t worry, not much has been going on here…just me fretting again over the header…ugh.

Oh all you sporty people…I love to have green around me and flowers – but I like to be inside viewing it all LOL I will always venture out tho to sit by any body of water….yup, spent so much time behind the Torpedo Factory, sitting on a bench just chillin’

    • Huh? Sporty people? Who? Where? I don’t feel sporty…more like portly, but I won’t get into that. I know the benches you speak of. It’s so beautiful there, the perfect place to take it easy. You need to come back to Alexandria, Grace!

  • What a lovely day and spot for a ride. I have to get my bike legs — it’s a great way of getting around (though now I am picturing having a spare pair of legs in the closet somewhere).

    • It was a beautiful day, Jennifer…kinda like what W calls “San Francisco weather,” which you know plenty about. Ha! Bike legs…it will take me weeks, maybe months, to get my bike legs, and now that you mention it, I’m kinda wishing they were in the closet.

That looks like a great place to ride. We have a bike trail around the beach here that I love to ride on. Mostly because it’s flat. I don’t do hills :)

    • Wow, ann, you live near the beach?! How very cool. The last time I rode close to a beach was in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and that was decades ago. Unfortunately Virginia is very hilly, so… .
