So, while my family was waiting to be seated inside the restaurant yesterday evening, I was hopping icy patches outside trying to capture as many interesting pics as I could find. We were a few blocks from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and if there’s one thing I love about college towns, it’s their hip shops. I would’ve loved to have walked the length of Fourth Avenue, but who wants to miss a seafood dinner in the land-locked State of West Virginia? (Actually, it was pretty good.)
So, maybe not the most interesting, but here is sunset on Fourth Avenue (I love the old Greyhound Bus station’s neon sign); the Italian restaurant, Rocco’s, next door to where we ate; the Frank Zappa “Toilet Poster”; a peace-pushin’ ‘shroom guy; and, a cool poster.
Hope everyone dealing with the “big snow” is getting along okay and keeping warm.

Glad to hear you’ll be coming back soon — and thanks for these pictures. I think we would drive through Huntington on our way back to Columbus from Maryland. Should have stopped there, but it was always a quick road trip.
And I hope your mother is doing well.

Hi Jennifer. Lazy me…here I am replying days later…argh. Glad you like the pics…I really haven’t seen much more of Huntington than this, which was a depressed area of town. You can see in the sunset high-rises, so I suspect that’s the business district.
Thanks, the mom is doing okay.
Looks like a fun place. Hope you Mom is well – bet you’re happy to be on your way home, tho.
Hi Grace, and thanks, my mom is fine. Yes, Dorothy was right. “There’s no place like home.”
Holly – the pictures are great – there’s probably a tour book waiting to be written for a cross country drive stopping at college towns and photographing their version(s) of hipness circa 2010. . . It looks like Huntington would certainly be on the list. And West Virginia is landlocked. . . only as long as the monongahela river stays in its banks. Every 10 years or so there’s a lot more waterfront property in the state.
Love the photos.
No big snow here (upstate NY) just cold.
Safe travels.
koe´s last blog post ..Reality Check
Thanks so much, koe. I’m glad you like the photos. And that sounds like a fun project for someone who has the time and money. This may be it as far as hipness in Huntington, WVa, although, to be fair, I didn’t venture any further. It seemed to be a very depressed area of town, though.
Who knows, maybe some of that seafood came from the river…or a freezer. Who knows. Heh.
The Frank Zappa toilet poster…been a long time since I’ve seen that one…wowie zowie…or somethin…
Anyway, definitely looks like a hipper part of West Virginia than I’ve experienced (seen some great natural beauty there but…

Geesh, I know what you mean, drjay. I’m sure if you can find this stuff in small-college-town, WVa, you can find it anywhere. And this was not one of the more beautiful parts of WVa, either, natural or otherwise. Very industrial, just like Charleston (which I pass through when I drive). Kinda icky.
Looks like a fun place. Although, I think it’s always fun to go anywhere other than the same old places. Gives you new sights to see and new things to discover.
ann´s last blog post ..Good deed for the day
I know what you mean, ann. I just like looking at new places, no matter the ick factor. You’ll just know better to not go again, that’s all!
Just returned from a funky college town myself and now wish I had taken more pictures! I enjoyed these.
Thanks, Bossy Betty, and oh yeah, take more pics…would love to see them!

Bird´s last blog post ..Winter Sale Now On…15% Off!!!
Hi Bird, so nice to see you! I hope you’re staying warm and your weather isn’t too bad. Yeah, these shops really caught my eye. They just popped out in an area that was quite bleak and dingy. And the dinner was fine, although sometimes I question my culinary inclinations… :o)
