A slice o’ Maine Avenue Fish Market (also called The Wharf) on DC’s Southwest waterfront. This is one of the few remaining open air seafood markets on the east coast, and although just blocks from some of the area’s most popular tourist attractions, this market is the locals’ best kept secret. Chock full of fresh and cooked seafood, as well as fresh vegetables, vendors yell at passersby, hoping to nab sales from their competition.
Back in the late 50s and early 60s, my parents would come here and buy fresh shrimp, then take them across the lot to another vendor to have them steamed with plenty of Old Bay Seasoning. Yummm. If you’re not up for cooking, there are several popular seafood restaurants right next door, which look out over the Washington Marina.

Chesapeake Bay seafood means one thing to me: hard shell crabs…

…and cold beer!
My main (!) association with this place is the sunny spring weekend when my soon-to-be-ex came back to DC (why, I do not remember; we had decided on divorce at that point) and we got a couple of pounds of mussels from here, cooked them up, and then went out drinking in Adams Morgan. The following day was not pleasant. But I don’t blame it on the Maine Avenue Fish Market or the mussels. I blame it on that last round of sambuca.

Ouch, Jennifer. I imagine your memories of here—as well as sambuca—are bittersweet then. There used to be (may still be) boat tours from here to Mt. Vernon, and as I remember, a bunch of us drank our way all the way to George’s and back. Luckily, we all made it back home, unscathed. So, my memories of here are more like geesh…glad I’m still alive. :o|
All the years we lived just outside of DC we rarely went there for recreational reasons – I suppose my husband had enough of the place from Monday to Friday…that first pic is so nice and clear and sharp even with the cloudy sky

Hi Grace. I think a lot of people who work in DC feel the same. I used to work at the Treasury Dept., and after trudging there and back, via the bus, I wasn’t keen on returning…however, on most of my recreational visits I was carted there by someone else, so… :o) Thank you for the compliment on the pic!
Looks like a lovely place to stroll about and rummage on a sunny spring afternoon.

Hi nothingprofound. Yes, this is a nice place to meander, especially on the weekend when it’s most crowded. A great place to people-watch!

Hi Onlinehandyman, and thanks so much. If you’re ever in DC (not sure where you’re at) it’s worth a visit, especially if you love seafood. Now, go eat!

Now that does sound good. Actually shrimp and catfish sound good too. I love fried catfish.
That first picture reminds me a little of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. In your other picture, it looks like the guy is having a picnic with his beloved bike.

Hi AVCr8teur. I liked this guy and his bike. They just kinda popped out from everything going on around him.
