Well, my first knitting project is underway, and I’m sending a huge thank you to my bloggy buddy Bird for suggesting that I take a look at ravelry.com. It’s a great online community for knitters and crocheters—which right off made me wonder—what am I doing there? I am neither communicable nor a knitter. Okay, so maybe I can get the knitting part down… Anyway, I found a free pattern for an easy project—something that I wear every single day in cold weather. I’ll keep it under wraps until it’s finished (and I know all of you are holding your breath here), although at this pace, I’ll be forced to model it for this blog in 100 degree weather.
And I made the mistake of telling my mother, the crafter extraordinaire, that I’ve finally started a project. Now, each night when I talk to her I hear, Have you knitted anymore?…Have you knitted anymore?…Have you knitted any more?… She will be thrilled if it turns out that I’ve inherited her knitting gene…which is unlikely, as I’ve just broken the tip off of the needle trying to get that blue rubber thingy off the end. I am not kidding. Damn.

Holly – my mom has been teaching my nieces how to crochet and it is so sweet to see them together working on their projects. It is one thing that bridges the generations in our family. When we were kids my mom taught me how to wash clothes and I am very very good at that. . . although it’s not really considered a craft in most circles.
It looks like you’ve made a nice start here – the rows like straight and neat and tight and they’re supposed to. . . right?
Hi Koe,
That’s a nice tradition and I bet your mom’s glad to pass on her skills as well as have her grandchildren’s interest. I think my mom always hoped that I would join in with the sewing, quilting and basket-making (yes, basket-making), but I just wasn’t that crafty. Knowing how to wash clothes is very useful as it can head off some catastrophes. I once washed something red with my father’s white tees and underwear. He was not amused as pink wasn’t his color.
Thank you, though. I think all is as it should be…except now I have to go buy another needle. And of course I won’t really know until I try it on. :o)

so let me add to your mom’s excited inquiries – is it finished yet? can you send photos yet? I am excited to see it too! Hurry! What’s next after this one – surely you’ll have it completed over the weekend, right? (excuse me, just couldn’t resist)
Diane´s last blog post ..Reflecting on a point in time
Okay, here goes, Diane…no, no, don’t know and no. Hee-hee, you’re funny. And my mom can’t resist either. She’s just like that. Once she’s stuck on something, she’s stuck on something.
It looks good so far. That color will look great on you.
Grace´s last blog post ..Body Worlds – Has anyone seen these exhibitions?
Thanks so much, Grace. Blue is one of my favorite colors, so I’m wearing it whether it looks good or not. Now fit is another thing, so I’ll have to wait on that one. And so will my mom.
By the way, thanks for the FB add…my first one! :o)
So…um…not to sound like yer mom or anything, but…make anything for me yet?
YogaforCynics´s last blog post ..Philly Street Art Revisited…
Heeeeee…that was funny, drjay. Be careful what you wish for. You may possibly become overrun with woolly beanies and mittens and chocolate chip cookies…oops, don’t know how that one got in there, though I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with that.
It looks lovely so far. Kudos to you. I don’t have the talent or patience for knitting. Make sure you take it easy on the repetitive movement, though. You don’t want to end up w/carpal tunnel. Make sure you take breaks!
Lana´s last blog post ..Work Continues & More Art News
Hi Lana and thanks so much. You sure have the talent for painting, though, and I think that’s something you just can’t pick up and learn. I would much rather create a beautiful painting, but that ain’t gonna happen. :o(
Shhh! Don’t let my mom hear you say “take breaks.” But I hear ya. :o)
so have you knitted any more?….lol I tried knitting once couldn’t get the hang of it but I can crochet some
ann´s last blog post ..Colorado here she comes
Hee-hee…actually, I’ve just mended the knitting needle—pencil sharpener and emery cloth. I’ll need to test it out now…after Lucy’s walk…and after I get a post up…and so on. See? No time to knit!

It’s looking great Holly, and kudos to you for sharing – I’m still slogging through a logjam of tasks right now but eager to share what I’m knitting too, once things stop being so crazy :) Your ribbing is beautifully neat! I’ve been going nuts with hats and scarves, all very imperfect but warm and I’ve been assured that although I can see the mistakes a mile away no one else can. I’m so glad you like Ravelry, it’s a great place for free patterns. Oh, and I haven’t done any communicating on there, I’m a terrible lurker :D
Bird´s last blog post ..Winter Sale Now On…15% Off!!!
Hi Bird and thanks so much. However, you see that ruffly edge there? Instructions said to cast on loosely—I made them too loose. Hopefully, like you say, no one will notice it or maybe it will correct itself after a washing. Oh well. I can’t wait to see one of your projects. If it’s anything like your blog, it will be superb, I know. And better warm than perfect! :o)

Hello again Holly! You know what, that edge probably will tighten a little with washing and anyway, it’s way better than being too tight – too tight on a ribbed edge and you may as well not have knitted rib at all! I really didn’t notice it being loose – but that might be because my edges are very similar ;)
And also I forgot to ask… what is it that you’re knitting? I’m intrigued!

This looks great to me. You should see my sewing projects — all off kilter with all kinds of mistakes, though I’m getting better (and no one bugs me to see if I am done yet). Keep on going — and there’s always next winter if you finish this one a little late.
Jennifer´s last blog post ..Pictures of Atlantis
Hi Jennifer and thanks. Oh my gosh, that is really impressive that you sew. I haven’t sewn since high school and even then I was awful. Straight seams I could manage, but zippers and buttons—yikes. Yeah, occasional nudging is okay, otherwise…nah. Sorry Mom.
