The Bike Is Restless

mycannondale

All was quiet this morning–except for Lucy, of course–when I heard thumping and knocking coming from the basement…so I investigated. And what the…??? Yes, the bike apparently had had it up to its handlebars with me and decided to drag its dusty and neglected self upstairs. I know. I was just as surprised as you. I mean, who would have guessed that bikes don’t like basements? Isn’t that where they’re supposed to live? And how was I to know? It never said a word. Anyway, like it’s not enough that it’s now encroaching on our living space, it now wants to stay upstairs and go out on rides. Geesh, and I thought Lucy was pushy.

Okay, so I told the bike we’d start out on the trainer on the back porch, just to get reacquainted before taking it on the road. It agreed, as long as it can roll to The Pretenders’ Learning to Crawl, which I’m on board with, as it has some great tunes for spinning. But the bike is also demanding blog time…stories and stuff about it. I said to take it up with Lucy, as the blog is pretty much her domain. I assume they hashed it out as the last time I saw Lucy, she was standing there barking at it.

So, to make a long story short–although it’s a little late for that–expect to see the bike pop up on the blog now and then. And I’m wondering, who’s in control here anyway?

  • You know, eventually the bike and Lucy could have a beautiful partnership. I mean, does Lucy ever complain that you’re just a little too slow? Well, out on the bike your new pace could be to her liking!

And no, bikes don’t really enjoy living in basements or being totally abandoned by their owners. There’s a couple of very sad bikes in my parent’s basement – which isn’t really a basement, more ilke the room underneath the main house… oh, its too hard to explain here! But it can’t be a basement if it has a sliding door that accesses the backyard, can it?

Anyway those two bikes look like museum pieces, perfectly preserved and only ridden a handful of times. Each time I’d go down there, I’d hear their sad lament. They’d see my bike get taken out for rides and say “I wish we could be like that bike! Take us out instead!”

Alas, my parents never heard their pleas. And I couldn’t disappoint my own. And there they sit to this day. Years have gone by since they last saw a bike path or the open road!

Glad to hear you’re not letting this become the fate of your bike. ;P

  • Too funny! Well, If Lucy says it’s OK to write about the bike, then I’m down with that. But if she thinks it’s getting too pushy, that’s fine too if it’ll mean more Lucy. I can never get enough of her.

The last time I rode a bike as an adult I couldn’t walk for a day. The bike probably didn’t feel so great either.

Holly – can’t wait to see photos from the bike. remember it’s still lawful to blog and ride at the same time. . .

  • I found your blog on blogcatalog and I like it. After glancing at some of your posts, I think that you can bring some valuable input to my site, where people come from around the world to share their thoughts and debate on popular topics.

You should check it out. If people like your thoughts towards these topics, they probably would check out your site. Just wanted to let you know.

  • Yes, that bike most definitely does look like it’s rarin’ to go…and, now that I think of it, “Thumbelina” does sound practically made for biking…

  • Hi Svasti. I’ve been meaning to get back on the bike for so long, but am all talk and no action. Then it occurred to me that exposing the bike to the blog could be the nudge I need. It’s really the only “sport” I enjoy and it’s good in all respects, as you well know. Your story of your parents’ bikes reminds me of my mom. Years ago my dad and I bought her a bike that she wanted for Christmas. I really thought she’d take advantage of it–my dad knew better and said she’ll never ride it. He was right and the poor bike wasted away. :o(

Hee-hee…that was funny…”The bike probably didn’t feel so great either.” Oh my, I know the feeling. It really takes me a week or two of sore butt and jelly legs before I get any sort of “bike legs.” Lucy appreciates you not getting enough of her! :o)

Hi koe…hee-hee, blog and ride at the same time. A few years ago I was thinking about using a bike cam, you know, kinda like Letterman’s monkey cam. Only thing is, I’d have to bleep my language as I dodged roller bladers and baby strollers. Although, that might draw some traffic…hmmm…

Hi drjay. “…’Thumbelina’ does sound practically made for biking…” Huh? Did I miss somethin’? Ya know, I’m not called earth to holly for nothin’… :o(

  • It’s a song on the Pretenders’ Learning to Crawl album…which I could swear I saw mentioned in a blog post recently…though I can’t remember exactly where…

  • Ahhh…otay, I gotcha. Had to go look up “Thumbelina”…I didn’t remember it or even how it sounded. I usually wouldn’t get that far on the CD before I was tired out, but you’re right, “Thumbelina” does sound like a good one. Ya know, I shoulda been able to figure that one out…argh. Thanks drjay.

Hey Holly, I have a favor to ask. Could you please make sure that your bike doesn’t try and communicate with my bike. Mine has been parked in the shed for over a year and if it gets wind of yours coming out of the basement it may start to think it should be taken out too. : )

  • Now that cooler weather’s coming, I really need to get new tires (or maybe just tubes,) for my bike. It’s been in the shed for 2 years now, unrideable.

  • That’s one pushy bike-but at least it’s pushing you in the right direction! Ride on! Blog on!

  • Hee-hee, ann. That’s funny…yes, I’ll try to keep mine reigned in…I know how they are when they get together. Right now mine is still confined to the house, so you’re safe!

Hi Icy BC and thanks…glad you like the pic. And yes, it needs the companionship of my you-know-what… :o)

Hi Lana and I know what you mean. Although it has dragged its sorry self up into the daylight, it now needs dusting, oiled chain and air in the tires. Like it’s not hard enough to get started…

Hi nothingprofound and you’re right. Now it would be nice if there were someone to push us both in the right direction…but I guess that would defeat the purpose. Oh all right, I’ll ride and blog–no hesitation there!

  • I love riding in cooler weather. That bike is awesome man! Keep on treking!

Oh Holly, bikes need to be free! Just think of the adventures you’ll have! And now I feel guilty, my trusty hybrid has been stuck behind the cobwebs in the hall too long. I think I can hear a rattling sound out there even as I write…
