Poor Lucy. For days prior to this, we had been walking through a neighborhood where she always found a strawy patch to plop down for a good backrub. When we later walked her at this park, she immediately recognized the stuff, albeit in the form of a GIANT LOOFAH, and proceeded to get cozy with it. Would you like some bath salts with that, milady?

What a stinkin’ post this is.
This is one of the many brown marmorated stink bugs that I found crawling along the edge of a garbage can in the park. Shortly after taking this photo I heard on the local news that these guys are considered invasive pests and that there’s possibly a higher-than-normal infestation of them this year in the D.C. area.
Originally from southeast Asia, they’ve only been in the United States since 1998, having settled first in Pennsylvania, but now found from the Carolinas to Oregon. They’ll munch on just about any kind of vegetation and they’re especially fond of certain fruits and maple leaves, but they do not bite humans or pets. In the fall they will try to find their way into buildings to winter and usually enter through open doors and windows and even small cracks. They’ll supposedly take up residence in walls and then emerge as a stinky mess in the spring.

This is Lucy’s friend, Chiarri. My apologies, Chiarri, if I misspelled your name, but you were so excited to get at Lucy that I only had a glance at your name tag.
Chiarri is a Rhodesian Ridgeback and is one of Lucy’s latest friends at the dog park. She’s a tough one, and during a sneak attack, can bump Lucy some distance off her feet. But Lucy’s tough too, and she bounces right back up. Despite their seemingly rough play, they are both very gentle souls, and much of their play time is spent in a standoff plotting the next move.
Check out those toesies on Chiarri. I can imagine them polished a beautiful shade of pink!

I have another big thank you for Svasti over at Svasti: A Journey From Assault To Wholeness. She has given Lucy’s new 2010 calendar a huge mention by placing it on her blog’s sidebar. This kind action goes above and beyond blogger friendship, I think, and Lucy and I appreciate the gesture. Thank you, Svasti!
