Green Heron In A Pond

greenheron2

greenheron

This is the green heron or Butorides virescens. Its build is small and chunky, and it has somewhat shorter legs than other herons. I would not have noticed it except that last week there were two photographers with BIG lenses, turned toward the pond. At first, I didn’t notice their subject as I didn’t see anything unusual. Then I saw it—perched on a branch in the water, practically camouflaged by the greenery. Although I took a few photos that day, they weren’t as close as these two that I took today. Still not close enough for my liking. Hey, I need a big lens too!

  • wow, i don’t think we have that kind of pond here, where it is just full of lilies. lovely. with the green heron, it makes the pictures even more special, lovely.

  • The photos of this green heron are interesting and very clear. Nice shots. Here we have great blue herons. However, as the weather has been extraordinarily hot and dry this year our pond is almost dry (unheard of) and that means the heron pair, who fish in my pond for frogs have moved to the mud flats on the beach to fish. I hope you and Lucy are well and happy.
    Namaste, tt

  • Wow…so much happening in each of these…without that flat lifeless quality my photos have (that, of course, I work hard to get)…

  • Holly – the photos are really wonderful. Lens envy – I’ve had it since forever. I decided to listen to Buffalo Springfield’s expecting to fly while looking at the green heron. I also decided to comment as my alter ego tonight. . . not sure why. I hope you don’t mind.

So – I can’t just sit here and listen – so I’ll type.

A friend and I – a ‘girl’ I met in 1969 when we started high school are thinking of going to woodstock before sunrise on the morning of August 15 – the 40th anniversary of the festival. I’m hoping to catch a photo or two of a ghost. . . what kind of lens do I need to photograph something that happened 40 years ago?

Thanks for all the photos you post and for visiting – it’s nice to see your work.

  • Thanks so much, betchai. This is a small pond in an area park, but it is full of turtles, herons (blue and green), dragonflies, butterflies and bees and yes, lots of greenery!

Hi TT and thanks, glad you like the shots. Sorry to hear of your too-dry weather. I’m sure your herons will return once you get some rain and it’s more enticing. Wow, a pair of blue herons…they’re really beautiful birds. Thank you for asking…yes, Lucy and I are doing fine as we hope you are. Lucy loves your visits and I love your new avatar—that’s my kind of hairstyle! Namaste to you, too…

Really drjay, am I gonna have to start on the cheesy positive affirmations? You may have been working hard on a flat lifeless quality for your pics, but in my opinion, you have failed. I love your photos and look forward to them. You seem to choose ones that are very meaningful to you, whether they are stock or your own, and I think that’s a big part of a good pic. Not to be a Miss Smarty Pants or anything, but that’s how I see it. :o)

Hi David, and all of your selves are welcome here anytime. And wow, that sounds like a very cool excursion…I’m guessing others will show up, too? I would love to see your photos…you might get a really nice sunrise there. So, you kept in touch with someone from high school? Don’t tell me…Facebook. Never mind, I’m just being nosy and silly. Anyways, you’re very welcome for the photos…glad you like them, and lenses are one of my many envies…you know, have-it-together envy, life envy and oh yeah, blog envy, of course…

Thanks, Charity, aren’t they pretty? Sometimes the pond is just full of them…maybe this is a little past their time. The pads are nice, though!

  • What great shots. You certainly have a good eye and sense of style.

  • Holl – you’re not being nosy. I don’t use facebook – I can’t keep up with everything I want to do so I can’t picture adding something new. I am interested in facebook and twitter but no, I don’t use them – none of my selves do.

So – there are 5 people from high school that I see on occasion and email frequently. three of them I have come to meet again through sheer coincidence over the past year and two I’ve seen pretty much non-stop. We don’t live close to any of them and none of them live very close together either. Of the 5 only 2 know each other. . . Ohhhh this seems so complicated. send me an email if you’d like – I don’t think I know yours – did you see my answer to your ‘who’s fred’ question?

Hi David. I’ve thought of joining Facebook, but then think about by whom I don’t want to be found. Hee-hee…it kinda sounds like I’m on the run or something…no, not that exciting. Anyway, friends can be complicating, although I know that’s not the kind of complication you’re talking about here.

Yes, I saw your fred explanation…thanks!

  • Lovely heron! We have them in my area, too, but I’ve never been able to get a picture of one. Not YET, anyway…

  • Hi and thanks, Lana. I would love to see the captures by those two people with the big cameras. I bet they were awesome.

  • I’m glad I’ve followed your link here to see the green heron. I don’t think I’ve seen one yet!
