More Jamey Turner And The Glass Harp

kingandunion

Saturday, I again caught a performance of Jamey Turner and his glass harp, and this time I remembered to hit record. Yay. Unlike my previous sighting of him right outside the Torpedo Factory Art Center, this time he was just steps away at the corner of King and Union Streets.

I was kind of surprised that the woman I captured here in the video interrupted him with a question in the midst of his performance. Urgh.

  • Believe me, you would be surprised the amount of talent out there performing as street performers. It’s really incredible. Unfortunately many people do not take them seriously so they will, as you’ve mentioned, interrupt when they are performing etc… Here in SF Carlos Santana and Robin Williams started as street performers out at Ghirardelli Square. Many go on to become famous and more don’t, but are able to make a living doing what they love to do. I admire and respect these performers sometimes more than I do the big names. This guy you have featured is fantastic.

  • How beautiful! I love this, and I think he has the kindest face.
(I think that broad realized she was being filmed and is the type that had to put a little acting into the scene. Typical.)

  • Holly, Holly, Holly, you missed the chance to get a video of yourself giving that woman a smackdown?!

Okay, maybe that wouldn’t go along with peace, love, & puppies vibe we all love so much here….

Wow Holly, this guy is amazing and as Lydia says he has such a lovely kind face. The dexterity involved is just mind blowing. What a wonderful instrument too – I’ve heard people make tunes on glass but nothing like as well done as this, absolutely nothing like. I had no idea it could be done. Thanks a LOT for sharing, because I love to see stuff like this.

I used to busk occasionally with friends and though the majority of people are great some will find the lack of distance too irresistible. People who talk to you are just mildly annoying, the bad ones are the ones that think they can “have a go” on your instrument in the middle of a performance.

  • Hi Joanne. Yeah, this guy is great at his art, and once in awhile he even invites onlookers to participate. I agree that street performers can be really amazing…and I didn’t know that’s how Carlos Santana and Robin Williams started out on the street, though I can perfectly imagine Robin Williams as a street performer…

Hi Lydia. Hee-hee! I laughed out loud at your comment. I think you’re right on there…yes, I think she did know I was recording and put on a little show. And I agree that he does have a kind face. And he has a disposition to match. I guess he’s used to occasional rudeness…still annoying to see it, though.

Hi drjay…you and Lydia are so funny. You know, I thought about giving her a bit of a slam in the post. Believe me, Lucy is the only one at ETH without a mean bone in her body. But, yeah, gotta keep the peace ‘n’ love rollin. But, I really am peaceful and lovin’ deep down…

Hi Bird. I’m so glad you liked it. I, too, find this kind of stuff incredible. He is very, very good and his performances kinda put you in a trance. While listening to his beautiful music, I’m thinking how in the world does he do that?? Really beautiful. And now I’m wondering about your own performances…wow, that is so cool! It sounds as though you play an instrument? How dare strangers want to intrude on your act—your musical instrument is a very personal possession, not something to be passed around for fancy. Urgh, again!

  • I love stumbling over your blog – it’s deja vu all over again. I moved from Old Town last year, having lived there for 10 years and so many of the photos you post are places I also have photos of and have posted on my blog (in years gone by) or elsewhere on the interwebz. I cracked up over the glass player because I have a short video of him too. I should upload that video and give you the link. What about the cello player? Is he still there at the Torpedo Factory. And the parrot rescue guy? And is the doo-wop group After the Storm still playing the streets of Old Town. My husband and I made the cd’s that they were selling on the street and in the Metro (usually the Federal Triangle stop). When we moved I gave them the masters for all the cd inserts, I hope they kept them and continued to use them. Your Old Town posts make me homesick…

  • Hi Grace. I’m glad you like it here, and it’s always nice to hear from a fellow Alexandrian. I think I remember the cello player, although I haven’t seen him in a long while, and I don’t remember the parrot guy or the doo-wop group. Since I’m now in Falls Church we usually walk there on the weekends and only once in awhile. I’ve never lived far enough away from Alexandria to be homesick, but I can imagine if I was not within easy driving distance. :o(

I’d like to see your video. It’s always interesting to hear the different songs Jamey Turner can play.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • The cello player and the parrot rescue guy were usually at the corner of King and Union. They were there last summer as was “After the Storm”, the doo-wop group.

Here’s the link to a very short clip of the glass player. I had just gotten my camera and wasn’t sure how to work it yet LOL

  • Hi Grace. Those are some great videos, and yes! I do remember the doo-wop group! Although I haven’t seen them lately. Like I said, we’re not down there all that much, anymore. Hmmm, Rolling Thunder…reminds me that years ago we hosted a participant in the rally. He’s a friend of my mom and he and a friend stayed over for a few days. There’s nothing like the sound of a Harley rolling into your driveway at 2 in the morning…
