Dion Skipping Among The Clover

Holy cow, not that Dion, but the Dion Skipper moth (Euphyes dion). I found it, skipping actually, from clover bloom to clover bloom in the same meadow where I recently found the Common Milkweed. Not to be out-run, rather out-flown, by something one-zillionth my size, I stayed hot on its trail—it was quick and very aware of my intrusion. And take a look at that “straw”—all the better to nourish itself with the nectar from this sweet clover, its major food source.

  • Well, I learned something today. Never heard of this Dion. Wonderful shots.

I see you are featuring Buffalo Springfield in your playlist now. I adore Jesse Colin Young…saw him in concert ages ago…what a mellow guy.

I joined a blog as a contributor recently that you might enjoy (they would sure enjoy you!). The manager is named Hans and he’s in Europe somewhere as far as I can tell so the group is international. Called PostYourDog or Cat.

  • I realize you’re bringing up the milkweed in hopes of getting me to tell the prized milkweed joke, again…but I simply refuse to take requests. Instead, I’ll quote the song my brothers and I wrote…or, at least, made up, since I don’t think it ever made it to the pen and paper stage…and, actually, I think this quote was the whole song: moths/ they fly up your nose/ moths/they eat your panty hose….As I remember, we found the very mention of “panty hose” hilarious….

Anyway, cool pics…I’d go for those purple flowers if I was a moth, too…

  • wow, i can see the fine details of the dion, can’t blame the dion for enjoying the clover, they both look a perfect pair in your picture.

  • Hi Lydia. Thanks, glad you liked the pics and the playlist. And thank you for the heads up on that website. I think I ran across it a long time ago, but am not sure. It looks like a great blog and I think Lucy would like taking part. Saw your kitty there…very adorable!

Oh well, it was worth a try, drjay. Guess I’ll have to settle for the panty hose song, keeping in mind that you were probably only 9 or 10 at the time of production. Mild compared to the milkweed joke, but cute…”panty hose”…hee-hee. I can definitely see the humor to three conspiring brothers…

Hi betchai and thanks. Yeah, Dion was only interested in the clover…totally ignored the sourrounding Queen Anne’s Lace and other goodies. :o)

Hi Cindy and thanks for the compliments. Lucy thanks you, too. I stopped by your place and enjoyed your photos, also. They look very professional!

  • Okay so now I finally know what a clover looks like.

    And thank you. :)

You know what? When I read the title…and then saw the bug…I thought… “she named that bug Dion?” hahahhahhahha!

Hi Icy BC and thanks. Glad you like the pic!

  • Great image of the moth…I have been capturing lots of butterflies and moths this summer..and I have still yet to get a decent photo of a peacock butterfly. I have seen plenty but they always seem to scoot away when I get near! So well done :D
I am not very good at moth identification. Although, I am not sure that we get these anyway but we do get clover !

  • Great blog, glad I stopped by! This is a wonderful macro shot…i love the detail! Can’t wait to check back for updates!

  • Hi Chrissy. I must come by and see your butterflies. I don’t think I’ve see a peacock butterfly before. Sounds like you’re having a productive summer!

These are gorgeous photos Holly, I can really appreciate how hard it is to capture a butterfly on the wing. There are similar butterflies in the UK which have the same slightly droopy winged posture and guess what I am so damn good that I can’t remember what they are called (perhaps some kind of skipper here too). I hang my head in shame. Time to try out some of that booklearnin.

  • Hello Bird. Thank you…I’m glad you like them. This guy was quick, but I think the nectar must’ve made him all woozy or something and he forgot that he was fair game. Geeze…booklearnin’…don’t start on that. I’ve yet to learn the intricacies of the camera, among a zillion other things. I am so behind…in life. argh.
