An Underprivileged Tree

graytree

Framed by a rusted sheet metal facade.

Flanked by signs and hydrants and seen as no different by passing dogs.

Trapped on a Wall Street of warehouses thick with exhaust, reaching for fresh breaths from above.

Seemingly sick, unlike its kindred, whom, well into summer, are healthy with growth.

Such is the life of this underprivileged tree.

  • That tree looks so sad, but also somehow hopeful – regardless of its circumstances, it still grows…

  • I LOVE IT! It breathes life into the man-made mess of molded rusted metal & concrete. It’s shadows make art. Against all odds it stands strong laughing in the face of adversity!

  • It’s not such a bad tree, Holly.
All it needs is a little love.

  • I was feeling so sad about the plight of this tree that my heart was just going awwh. Then I decided to feel happy for it being the one-and-only thing of beauty in its area. It must be very proud.

Holly – I really like photographs where one’s perspective is being toyed with. A lone tree in a forest of warehouses or a lone warehouse in a forest of trees (!) are both compelling to me, causing me to look a little longer. The walls of the warehouse are patched (it looks like there were windows at one point in it’s life) the road is patched. Nice photograph, nice words too. Write more.

  • Hi Svasti. I agree. I originally used the word ‘hopeful’ to describe the tree reaching above. It’ll probably out-live all around it!

Hi betchai. Yes, it does look sad, but not so much in the original color photo. It looked a little happier there!

Hi campbelljane and thanks. It is quite a contrast…and I totally missed its shadow. I do believe it will persevere.

Hi drjay. No, not such a bad tree, just a bad environment. I’m afraid the only love I can give it is to tell its story—of course, the tree is probably perfectly happy and it’s me who sees despair. Argh.

It must’ve felt strange waking up and having no wet nose in your face, huh? Bella’s people are lucky to have you. I think one of the biggest stresses of having a dog is to sometimes have no choice but to leave them when travelling and have to decide what’s best for them. I’m sure Bella misses you, too.

Hi Lydia. Yes, you’re right there. It is one of the only things of beauty on that block. I think it has a few companion trees along that stretch.

Hi, Koe and thanks. Glad you like the photograph and words. I’m no writer so I always struggle with words.

I almost posted the original photo—blue sky, blue-gray building and gray road. I loved the coloring and may have to post it sometime. Black and white gave it a totally different feel…bleak.

  • It may be underprivileged but it is still beautiful to me. I love trees.

  • Thanks, Joanne, and I agree. This poor tree is not alone as far as bleak surroundings go, but is still a beautiful survivor.

  • Imagine if we humans live like that.. Poor tree.
