This is the lettuce leaf poppy (Papaver somniferum), also known as the opium poppy, that Lucy and I found at Green Spring Gardens. Most often pink or mauve, the annual is sometimes found in red and white. Opium is made from the nectar or “latex” taken from the green seed pods.

Just goes to show…one day you’re listenin’ to that hippie music, and the next you’re out lookin’ for opium poppies…ooh oooooh, the damage done…
Nice pics, though…

There’s a house we pass on dog walks that has amazing flowers, including a long stretch of these. They are very popular with bees. But I didn’t really know what the flowers looked like until I saw this photograph. (Maybe because there are usually three noisy Pomeranians in the yard, snarling and barking at Nora and distracting me, but I think it’s more because of your photography skills.) Beautiful.

Hi and thanks Yanic. This is the first time I’ve seen them and I wouldn’t have guessed that they were poppies.
*****
Hi Ebie and thanks. Yeah, I’ve only seen the single petal poppies…nothing as showy as these.

Hi JD and thanks. I, too, had never heard of these. And I didn’t realize it was the opium poppy either…had to look that up!

Hi Theresa. I know…I just love these pastel colors.

Hi Jennifer and thanks so much for the compliment. Glad you could make an identification from my pics. I read that all parts of these poppy plants are very poisonous…sounds like the Pomeranians are aware of this!
Wow…haven’t seen this flower before! Beautiful, beautiful flower, and great shots!!!

This is such a beautiful flower photograph, so sharp and beautifully exposed…apologies for the technical talk, but I have serious envy here. And a gorgeous subject. These poppies grew wild for a little while along the river Lee near where I live and I know how stunning they are. They got cleared out though… sad, because you need a LOT of poppies to produce opium so the clearence was just done out of ignorance.

Thanks so much, Bird. This was pure luck. That damn flower was a foot into a garden bed (that you’re not supposed to trounce) and turned opposite the sun (what’s with that???) and me. I finally had to step one foot into the bed and hold the camera high up over it (it was almost as tall as me) and take my chances. Holy crap, like I said, pure luck… Oh my gosh, don’t get me started…W always teases me about my “blog envy.”
That is very sad about the poppies being mowed down. I’ve never seen this kind before and can imagine that a long row along the river must have been beautiful.
we always want to put lettuce in our vegetagble salads and vegetable soups.`**
i love to eat pickled lettuce and also raw lettuce, it really taste great`*-
