No Lucy Was Harmed During The Filming Of This Video

I’m not a fan of “funny animal” videos, because sometimes I feel that the poor things are kind of exploited…laughed at for something that can’t be helped. So, I’m probably a hypocrite and a bad mom for showing this, but I thought it kinda showed Lucy’s smarts…kinda. I wanted her to come out from under her towel and knew that “Look!” would do the trick, but I really expected that she would free herself first. So, how did she know the direction of the window? From the light shining through? Or are her instincts just that good?

Anyway, we had just come back from her walk in the park where she had been playing in the creek. After rinsing and while attempting to dry her, she started whipping the towel around and tugging, so we decided to drape her with it and let her go at it. After a few minutes, chewing up the towel was more appealing to her, so…

Please don’t call the ASPCA on me—I really did think she would come out first…

  • Fantastic! I don’t think you’re a terrible dog mom. This was funny! Looks to me like she was enjoying herself in the little towel house there. I enjoy seeing her in videos, she’s so lively! :)

Lucy is very obedient, she came out when you asked and sat when required. Good Bog. Pat Pat.

I think it was cute!! I read somewhere that how long it takes a dog to come out from under a towel is a test for intelligence. I’m not sure what it means if she chews on the towel though ;)

  • That was so cute! She’s adorable.

  • Looks to me like she had a good time, and doesn’t seem to have been at all wounded by being laughed at, so it’s all good….

  • Thanks lisleman. Yeah, youtube is pretty good. It’s enough for me just to get a video up, so I haven’t thought much about adding music. Your youtube page is nice!

Hi and thanks, Svasti. Towel house—I like that! You always come up with neat names for stuff. Yes, very lively, but she likes her beauty rest, too. :o)

Hi Glennis. Don’t let her fool ya. “Look” or “go see” will send her to the window and she’s always been a sitter. She just looks obedient…

Hi and thanks, Flo. You know, I heard that too…and there are a few other things you can do to test them. Lucy never keeps anything on her head, so I’m surprised she stayed under there so long. I think shredding the towel distracted her… :o(

Thanks, Petula, and thanks for stopping by.

Hi drjay. Yeah, Lucy’s a good sport, however, she did look a bit pitiful as “the flying towel.” Crazy dog…

  • It is so funny!

  • Bwah ha! The great thing about dogs is they have no guile whatsoever. As a result, they can’t effectively lie, nor do they give a crap how foolish they may look. Gotta love dogs!

Lucy is very sweet and eager; I’ll bet she didn’t mind much at the time, she’s just impatient to see what you are showing her. It’ll all be forgotten about by now. Just think of it as the equivalent of your mum showing the neighbours embarrassing pictures of your three year old self… it’s something a parent does, (whether the babies are human or animal) and the urge cannot be stopped! Lucy cares about it far less than you do…and her sweetness made me smile :)

I know what you mean about all the cute animal stuff on the internet. My guilty secret is that I love “I can haz cheezeburger,” but generally I’m pretty thin lipped over things that look staged or mean. I especially hate all those “this bird is best friend with a mouse” pictures where you can see that two unwilling animals have been forced into a pose to make a picture – that ain’t cute, it’s ABUSE. I stopped looking at certain websites a long time ago because of that.

  • Thanks, Paul. Yes, I thought it was funny, too. I’ve seen her jump up to the window a zillion times, but never like that!

Hi Lana. Yeah, I agree. Their innocence is so endearing…who could not love a dog?

Hi Bird and thanks. Yeah, I don’t think this was too exploitative, though, like you, certain animal stuff is just too much. I think what made me feel a little guilty about Lucy’s video was her complete helplessness…but she was so cute, and unharmed, I couldn’t resist…

I haven’t seen the bird and mouse pictures, but what always comes to mind when I think of animal exploitation videos are the ones of the dog chasing its tail and the dog that would constantly run into walls—seemingly obssessive behavior and neurological problems (hey—all of a sudden I’m a vet!) and not just play-fun.

Now, I like “I can haz cheeseburger” too…and Fuck You Penguin… It must be the video aspect that gets to me…

  • Obedient Lucy.. Maybe she was just trying to play with ya’(initially).

  • Hi Doson. She loves chewing on stuff, especially that towel. She did look obedient with that “sit” at the end there, but she sits anyway!

Thanks, Lydia. During these videos I try to remember to not say too much, but get wrapped up in the moment and forget…oh well. Glad you liked it, though!
