I came across these on a rotting tree trunk on one of Lucy’s walks in Mason District Park. It’s a macro shot of what I believe is Xylaria Polymorpha or Dead Man’s Fingers. Of course to Lucy they’re plausible treats. Ugh.

Wow and blech! That is a superb photograph Holly!
Do you get stinkhorns over there? I think the ones we have in GB are called phallus impudicans which gives you some idea of what they look like but nowhere near how bad they smell. As kids we called the “smelly willies” and I seem to remember that dogs are fascinated by them… These look really similar but with an added layer of mould! I bet they are related.

Sure they’re not an actual badly decomposed dead man’s fingers? I’m getting flashbacks to Carrie and Poltergeist, here….

Thanks, Nick. Hmmm, not sure if they’re edible, but you could be right. Seems they’d be good in a vegetarian soup.
Thanks, Bird. I had to google your “smelly willies” and HELLO! I see what you mean…how attractive! I’m sure they’re over here somewhere but I’ve not been lucky enough to run into them. If I do I’ll give them a sniff just because now I’m curious. Maybe Lucy will root them out for me like a hog hunting truffles! :o)
Hey drjay. I think a more appropriate name for them would be “fairy fingers” as they’re kind of small and they come in different colors. Although these do look like they could’ve come from a dead fairy, so maybe “dead fairy’s fingers.” Now I’m getting flashbacks… :o|

Haha! I just googled them too, there certainly are some quite educational pictures out there :D (Glad I only made one spelling mistake in the name so googling worked, my dyslexia sometimes makes for bizarre latin spellings)
I should warn you, if there are any phallus inpudicus around you wont need Lucy to find them for you, and getting close to sniff one is not recommended. The stench will drop you in your tracks at 1000 paces, you often smell them before you see them :D
