Teach your doggies well

Here’s Lucy enjoying one of her favorite activities.

When she was very young we would kick the tennis ball into the air rather than throw it and only occasionally would we tell her to “bring it.” Sixteen months later she’ll only chase if the ball is kicked, and whether or not she catches it, she leaves it and runs to us so we can kick a ball we don’t have. The lesson here is don’t be lazy parents in the formative years!

That’s a fabulous action shot! I’d caption it for you but I don’t seem to have my “funny” on at the moment :D I’ve come across a few dogs that do exactly the same thing. I guess a clever dog will figure it out in the end?

  • Thanks Bird. I think her “clever” may kick in when she loses her “lazy!” :o)

  • we have friends who have never owned a dog and are thinking of getting one. these friends have seen our pets come and go for almost 20 years. they will admit, our dogs are friendly, stay away from the dinner table, don’t jump on you, can play games. the cats? no comment…

now that they are thinking of getting a pet they are doing due diligence research and share their wisdom with us when the opportunity presents itself. here is the latest… don’t feed the animal before you eat. they need to know the chain of command, that you are the superior being and they have to wait.

this scares me half to death!

  • Yeah, we always eat first and Lucy knows she needs to wait until we’re through, but in a lot of other ways we’re not as strict as we should be so she gets away with alot. They’re such creatures of habit, I think if you do anything consistently they’ll get used to it.

  • [...] to exploit her enthusiasm, I started telling her to “circle” in preparation for the kick-off. As you can see, I’m goading her with the ball to keep her attention, and I think she’s [...]
